Mindful Eating Homework

Mindful Eating Homework

Training ourselves to be mindful eaters involves inner and outer wisdom. Inner wisdom describes awareness of our thoughts and feelings that influence our eating decisions. Outer wisdom describes nutrition knowledge and cooking skills. Putting both kinds of wisdom into practice helps promote a healthy relationship with food.

Practice mindful eating with some “homework”

Mindful Eating Homework

  1. Next time you’re hungry, use Michael Pollan’s “apple test” from his book, Food Rules: “If you’re not hungry enough to eat an apple, you’re not hungry.”

  2. Use all of your senses when eating. Note the color, texture, smells, and even the sounds of your food as you prepare and eat it.

  3. Aim to drink at least half your bodyweight in ounces of water, seltzer and unsweetened tea. Drink these beverages throughout the day between meals and snacks.
