Gluten-Free Grains

Gluten-Free Grains

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye as well as food products containing those ingredients. Although it has become a recent trend, a gluten-free diet is only medically necessary for some people. For example, people diagnosed with celiac disease must follow a gluten-free diet for life.

Although some whole grains contain gluten, there are many gluten-free whole grains that can be enjoyed by people following a gluten-free diet. Gluten-free grains include quinoa, rice, wild rice, sorghum, amaranth, millet and some oats. While oats are naturally gluten-free, they may come into contact with gluten-containing ingredients during growing or processing. To find gluten-free food products such as oats, look for a gluten-free certification label.

If you have questions about following a gluten-free diet, make an appointment with a registered dietitian.
